How to Update BMW Navigation

If your BMW is more than one year old, it might be time to update the BMW navigation software. Contained on a DVD, BMW updates the software every six months by adding new streets, restaurants, lodging, points of interest, and other miscellaneous items. Especially if you are on the road a lot and depend on your GPS navigation system to guide you around traffic jams, you should be prepared to update BMW navigation software at least every year.

Operating Software

Over the life of the navigation computers newer versions of the operating software have been released.  You can determine the hardware and software version by looking at the information on the top right side of the ‘SET’ screen.  Below you can see that the navigation hardware is a Mk3 and the release is 63.

The numbers have the following meanings:

  • The first digit specifies the generation of the navigation system
    1= Mk1; 2 = Mk2; 3 = Mk3 and 4 = Mk4.
  • The second digit device variant 1 = color screen.
  • The last two digits are the software version of the graphic  component.

With the introduction of the navigation system operating software V32, there are currently 2 valid versions of navigation software:

  1. Navigation system operating software V17.1 is used on MK III systems without the “split screen”.
  2. Navigation system operating software V32 is used on MK I, MK II, MK III navigation systems with split screen, DVD-Top navigation systems (MK IV) on I-Bus vehicles and NAVI01, NAVI02,  NAVI03 on E65/E66 vehicles.

After loading NAVI SW V32, the vehicle must be driven to ensure the proper functioning of the navigation system and the correct display of road number icons (e.g., interstate icons).

E65 and E66 Systems

  • Enter the Service Mode of the Control Display.
  • Select “MOST Devices”.
  • Scroll down and select “Navigation”.
  • Scroll down a few pages until “Software Version” is displayed.
  • Software version for CD navigation (NAVI01) should be 7.3.2 (I-level E065-05-03-810.2).
  • Software version for DVD navigation (NAVI02) should be 8.4.4 (I-level E065-05-03-800.2).
  • Software version for DVD navigation (NAVI03) should be E065-08-03-550 (SW 09.08.02).

The BMW navigation systems came in versions from Mk1 to Mk4 up until 2003.

After that a completely new version was introduced which were not compatible with older vehicles.

Vehicles manufactured in these years were:

1996-1997 – Mk1 – male voice
1997-2000 – Mk2 – female voice
2000-2002 – Mk3
2002-        – Mk4 – DVD

Upgrade Mk3 to Mk4

The upgrade from a Mk3 system to a Mk4 system is straight forward.

The plugs and sockets are the same on both units so it is only a matter of removing one and plugging in the other.

To update BMW navigation, you will need:

Your BMW owners manual – different cars have different ways of opening
the DVD drive but most cars have the drive right in or behind the radio.
Locate your BMW car manual and find out how to open the CD/DVD drive.

The CD or DVD navigation discs are stored in a drive behind the radio.
There will be a button on the radio for either ‘eject’ or ‘open’ which you will
need to press in order to load the new disc.

Eject your old BMW navigation disc.
After the drive is open, eject the old disc (if there is one –
the newer cars might have the GPS information stored on a computer drive so
there may not be a disc.
If there is a disc, eject it, and insert the new CD or DVD disc.
That’s all there is to updating your BMW navigation system!

TO UPDATE THE SOFTWARE (V32)

To Determine what software and hardware you have On the Main screen of your display, choose the “settings” selection. on the top right you will see the Computer version and software version: See image below SW 2-1/81. This means 2 = MKII ; 1 = single display (Not split screen) 81 = Software version 81, or BMW Navigation V 21 CD (or greater)

Take the cd to the car,

Turn the ignition to position 1 (terminal R)

Activate “GPS-Navigation”

Remove the map CD from the navigation computer by pressing the “Eject” button

When programming any E65 or E66 using Program V27. or higher,
you will be prompted by the Program screen that the
“BMW navigation CD” must be loaded prior to programming the vehicle.
Note: Connect an approved battery charger before loading the software.
  1. Turn the ignition on to Terminal R or 15.

You may need to reset
language to English and turn on perspective

view again from the hidden menu if  it is not there.

If you’ve never had perspective view before,

you’re in for a treat, here’s how you activate

it so as it appears in the map position
menu.

Disk stuck in Navi unit:

1. Insert the key and turn engine on for a few seconds

(20-30 seconds in my case)

2. Turn engine off, remove key
3. insert key again (DON’T TURN ENGINE ON)

4. Go to Navi unit and press eject and the disc should come out.

If you get a message for cd key Just insert it  (mk3 only)

5. Hold down the eject button for 3 minutes,
It is recommended that you try these in the following sequence, as each progressive step becomes more complex and riskier.

Other Methods

Solution 1:

Put the key into the ignition and turn to position 1 or 2. Go to the nav computer and press and hold the eject button. The button will flash while pressed, and you must keep hold of the eject button for about 3 minutes. You’ll notice that eventually the light on the eject button will stop flashing. As soon as you see this let go of the button, and press it again quickly. The CD will hopefully eject.

Solution 2:

Remove the power to the nav unit (either by disconnecting the battery or removing the cables from the back of the uint) and then reapply power while holding down the eject button.

iDrive Hidden/service menus

For cars with the iDrive (satelite navigation) option, two hidden menus exist.
Note: these hidden menus are not available anymore in newer (starting with September 2008 manufacturing) cars as they have a completely new iDrive system.

Hidden debug menu

The first one contains data mainly meant for debugging purposes, and is not of interest to most people. To access this menu, follow these steps

  • Make sure your in the main menu (the one with the ‘i’ in the centre and the 4 quadrants)

iDrive hidden menus - e90

  • Press the iDrive controller down, and keep it pressed for 8 to 10 seconds and release.
  • Rotate the iDrive controller 3 ticks clockwise (right)
  • Rotate the iDrive controller 3 ticks counter-clockwise (left)
  • Rotate the iDrive controller 1 tick clockwise (right)
  • Rotate the iDrive controller 1 tick counter-clockwise (left)
  • Rotate the iDrive controller 1 tick clockwise (right)
  • Press the iDrive controller down, and release

iDrive hidden menus - e90

This screen will be shown, press the iDrive controller again to get to the next one.
iDrive hidden menus - e90
You can scroll through the ECU list and press the iDrive controller to view data. Note:

It seems impossible to get to the ‘Exit’, ‘Prev’ and ‘Next’ buttons on these screens,

and the same applies for scroll-bars.

To exit the diagnostics menu, simply hit the menu button below the iDrive controller.

Hidden navigation menu

The second one is a hidden menu for the navigation system, and is more interesting. For instance here you can see your true speed as measured by the GPS (km/h only!)
Note: the iDrive controller on post March 2007 manufactured cars is no longer able to move diagonal, as such it is not possible to enter this hidden menu anymore (at least until someone finds/leaks an alternative way).
To enter this menu follow these steps:

  • From the main menu, select the ‘Navigation’ option (move controller to the right)

iDrive hidden menus - e90

  • In the navigation menu, press the controller down three times, until your at the bottom ‘row’
  • now highlight (but do not press!) the “Map, indicating dir. of travel” option, and follow the following steps..

iDrive hidden menus - e90

  • Move the iDrive controller to the top-right corner (diagonal), and keep it there for 8 to 10 seconds and release.

  • Now move the controller right once, so you can scroll through the different options

All BMW 3series cars of the E90, E91, E92 (and probably E93) family have hidden/service menus in the Board Computer (BC)
Although on cars with iDrive, some of this information can be accessed in a more readable format through the hidden iDrive menus

Accessing the menus
To access these hidden menus (or service menus), you have 2 options..

Option 1

Turn ignition on, or start your car
Press and hold the button to reset the daytrip/odometer for 10 seconds

Option 2

Press and hold the button to reset the daytrip/odometer
While keeping this button pressed, insert the keyfob into its slot, and release the button

At this point the BC should display data in a “XX.YY” format. So if the BC displays “01.00″, that means Main Menu 01, sub menu 00
To continue to navigate the menus, you need to use again the daytrip/odometer button (hereafter just called ‘button’)
